I have an Arum Lily (the tall white one with the big green leaves)?

Its not against a wall or any support and is now getting very overgrown. Last year it got too heavy to hold itself up and all the stems just collapsed onto the ground. I just pulled half of them off as near to the bottom of the plant as I could.

What is the proper procedure for dealing with thinning out this plant, please? I love it but its just too big for its own good.

Great stuff but they need to be thinned out. In nature there are a number of browsers that do that for Mother Nature. So if it is in your garden you have to do a bit of thinning out to get the best results.

Arums are normally found near or in watercourses. So they enjoy having wet feet. Under these circumstances they also need to be in full sun or nearly full sun. I think that is your problem. In a garden they will need to be watered regularly and will tolerate a bit of shade but not too much.. they get leggy and the stalks bend and fracture.

To propagate or move just dig the plant out and cut the rhizome with a sharp axe or spade (I use a cane knife) to separate and simply re-plant and keep moist for two weeks or so depending on your climatic conditions.
Reply:split the roots in half with a spadwe and replant
